IKEA's 2014 Augmented Reality Catalogue places furniture in your home
Swedish furniture maker
IKEA's next catalog will truly come to life, helping people envision what next
year's tables and chairs will look like in their living rooms.
Shoppers will be able to
place virtual furniture from Ikea's 2014 catalog in their living rooms, using
their smartphones or tablets. A new feature on the furniture maker's mobile app
now includes augmented reality.
Though the
company first experimented with augmented reality in its 2013 catalog, the new
version of the app goes well beyond the novelty of interactive pages, videos
and photo galleries.
Users can select from 90
items in the catalog to scan with the app, and then place the physical catalog
on the ground. A 3D image of the selected item will appear in the display of
the screen of a smartphone of or tablet. The app is available for iOS and
Android devices.
Simply
place the catalog in the spot where you're considering adding a new piece of
furniture, scan the catalog with the augmented reality app on your mobile device and select the
desired item.
The augmented reality feature then projects the
item into your home by layering it over a real-time view of your room captured
through your device's camera. The app also lets you experience the scale of the
objects in relation to your living space.
