BBM for Android and iPhone Release date announced, as BlackBerry Z30 Launch is anticipated

BlackBerry has confirmed that its popular instant messaging service, BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), would launch on Android on 21 September and iOS on 22 September. The firm will also launch a new smartphone next week, the Z30.

Andrew Bocking, Executive Vice President for BBM at BlackBerry said: "With more than a billion Android, iOS, and BlackBerry smartphones in the market, and no dominant mobile messaging platform, this is absolutely the right time to bring BBM to Android and iPhone customers."

BlackBerry said the BBM app will be available to download for free from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

The Canadian smartphone maker has also announced a new smartphone called the Z30. It didn't want Apple to get all the limelight this week with the launch of the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C.

The Z30 is BlackBerry's biggest smartphone to date with a 5 in AMOLED screen (no word on resolution though). It also features a 1.7 GHz processor with quad-core graphics, an antenna to improve connectivity in low signal areas and BlackBerry OS 10.2.

It also has the largest battery to be put in a BlackBerry (2880mAh) which the firm says will provide up to 25 hours of 'mixed use'.

A price is yet to be announced but BlackBerry did confirm that BlackBerry 10 OS version 10.2 will be available for the BlackBerry Z10, BlackBerry Q10 and BlackBerry Q5 smartphones beginning mid-October.
